Kenmore 158.905

The Model 90 is one of the most elegant machines I own.

Update: I bought this really beautiful machine at a thrift store for next to nothing, complete with a heavy table that I plan to save and refinish. (It's actually one of the nicer Kenmore tables that could look very good in the right color.) The only attachments included were a small collection of vintage Kenmore needles (always a plus) and a box of rotary attachments that don't fit this machine at all.

A couple of days ago and cruising CL, I saw an ad for Model 90 attachments and manual, free. I contacted her and 30 minutes later drove home with a box of attachments that needed a matching machine. I for one greatly appreciate when someone has something and wants to get rid of it and instead of simply tossing it in the trash, lines it up neatly, photographs it, lists it, and communicates with someone re. where they are, when to pick it up, etc. She saw these items as still useful to someone (and they're in very good condition) and I happened to be just the candidate, as I had the exact machine but w/out any of these attachments. (I did have the manual and some attachments from a similar model that would work with my Model 90. However, it's great when each machine has its own set.) Included are the appropriate buttonholer, a complete set of cams (the 'G' cams), a Kenmore circular sewing attachment for designs, a box of side-clamping low-shank presser feet, a not-quite-full box of vintage bobbins (always valuable), and the manual.

  1. Would it be possible to get a copy of the manual? I just acquired this machine and cabinet (not as nice as yours) today but there is no manual and none available through Sears.

    1. Try the following: https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/VintageKenmoresSew/info

You'll have to join the group, then access their Files section for a list of free manual downloads.

  2. Any idea how I might be able to find the manual for this machine (specifically the 90 w/ the bobbin winder on the TOP)? I tried joining the Yahoo group and for some reason I was denied. I have VSMs and said so in my intro, but did not get a reason, and can't find a reason in the "about" page. Sigh.

    1. Go to Yahoo!. Search Groups for Kenmore sewing machines; there are several devoted to them. Join any and/or all of them if you can. This is a common machine and the manual should be available there for free download. That or you could always purchase a download. Prices vary.

The bobbin winder being on top of the machine instead of behind a door on the front is not a crucial difference. It operates exactly like all other top-loading bobbin winders and doesn't affect any of the other operations, so a manual specifically for a similar model should give you whatever other information you might need.
