Necchi BU

  1. I am looking at a Necchi BU in my are and you are a big fan of Necchi's, is this a good one to have? We do not have Necchi's come up very often around here and I would like to get your opinion of the BU.

    1. John, the BU is one fine machine. I have several other Necchis and to be honest, I don't use this one but mine sews anything from light to heavy (wovens, in particular) with ease. It's cast iron and steel, so it's heavy and I recommend buying it in a table or buying a table for it. Selecting the zig-zag width is as easy as moving the lever side-to-side and limiting the width and length is accomplished with screw limiters. The tension is very finely threaded so you can adjust it to nearly infinitely variable tensions depending upon the materials you're putting through. My BU presser bar doesn't lift quite as high as the BU Nova or Mira models -- a minor disadvantage. It's oscillating and my particular model (1951) has a 1.1 amp motor.

The BU is one of the first sewing machines I ever purchased and I knew absolutely nothing at the time. Neither did the seller and he thought the foot pedal was missing, so he lowered the price substantially. When I got it home, I found it has a knee pedal inside the cabinet, a setup I've come to prefer. The BU is very smooth but not quite as smooth as the Mira, nor as quiet. It's a beautiful, strong machine and I highly recommend you purchase it providing the price is reasonable. It's a simple zig-zag, so there are no cams or other special attachments to worry about other than presser feet, etc and this is a low shank machine, so not much of an issue there.

Good luck and let us know if you take the plunge! A BU or a Mira or a Nova or Supernova -- I'm a fan of them all.
