Kenmore 158.1756

It's been said that the best things in life are free.  In the case of the above Kenmore 158.1756, that is certainly true.  Found on craigslist for $25 including the cabinet, I contacted the very nice seller and we agreed to meet.  He explained he was moving and didn't want to take it with him and when I examined the machine in-person, I found the feed dog drop lever was stuck and one of the dials was slightly loose.  He immediately offered it for free, asking if I'd please take it.  I told him that I felt badly that his machine wasn't in tip-top shape and offered an even lower price but he refused to take any money.

I've met great people using craigslist and he was just the kind of seller you want: reasonable, funny, and not a cheapskate, as he knew it would have cost him more in time and effort to find another means of getting rid of the machine than the price he offered (free).  A thrifty guy -- just my kind of person!

  • 1.2 amp motor
  • feed dog drop
  • interlock power/light switch
  • built-in buttonhole drive
  • cam stack
  • cam assembly
  • stitch modifier lever for built-in stretch stitches
  • all-metal workings
  • double-needle capable
  • bobbin winder
  • reverse lever
  • low shank
  • button-style pressure control
  • two spool pins
  • reversible straight/zig-zag plate insert
  • designed by Kenmore and made in Japan by Jaguar/Maruzen

A large number of accessories were included in the 'sale', notably a set of cams for decorative stitches and a chain stitch attachment.  Cosmetically, the machine is not great.  There are a few dings on the cam assembly door and a few others elsewhere.  Considering how well it runs, the number of features and accessories, and the price paid, this is a fantastic machine.
