Kenmore 158.18023

  1. Do you happen to know the difference between this model and 158.1802.4? Sears Parts Online does not know. They suspect it is color, I doubt that, mines looks identical to the machine pictured here.

    1. I'm not sure. Initially, I thought the different suffixes indicated shank height but apparently this isn't the case. I then suspected it might be color or slight variations in features but I don't think this is true either. (I only own 18023 models, so I can't do a direct comparison.) It could be that there are slightly different internals or that the numbers refer to the years in which they were made (by some secret code only known to Kenmore engineers). If you ever find the answer, please let me know!

  2. Mouse, you are correct in that there are slightly different internals between 18023 and 18024. I went to Sears Parts Direct and looked at every diagram and coordinating parts list. I found very slight differences in the internal parts. Nothing significant at all. Both machines do the exact same thing and take the exact same attachments, which I think is what matters most. Thanks for the blog, its great! I'll return.

    1. Thanks, Melani -- that's good to know, as I've never been sure about the differences in 1802 machines. And thank you for the kind words!

  3. Do you have a walking foot for your 1802? Been looking for one, any help would be great. I think part #RWA8 Kenmore Super High Shank is the one, not sure. Sites I have seen do not have any reviews from previous purchasers. Wanna get it correct the first time. Thanks.

    1. I don't have a walking foot for my 1802. Make sure you know your shank height prior to ordering any type of walking foot. (There are are walking feet for all three heights but none are cheap.) If yours is super-high, you can get an adapter that will enable you to use the common low-shank feet and attachments. Try this site:

      http://sewingmachine221sale.bizland.com/store/page106.html

There you'll see 'Kenmore Super High Even Feed/Walking Foot'. If yours is already a low-shank or high-shank, the super-high won't fit. The part number listed there might at least give you a means to search the appropriate foot (if that one isn't what you need). Or if that one works, there you go! :D

  4. My machine is a super high shank. I will check this site out. I have read the some people have had problems with the super high shank walking foot not working for their Kenmore super high shanks. I don't know what the deal is there. I will continue to research before purchasing. I am thinking like you, that purchasing an adapter for low shank might be the way to go. It's that lever that goes over the needle bar that seems to be the problem. Thanks again.

    1. No problem! If you find a foot that works, we'd love to know about it. Thanks very much and good luck.

  5. I think the on/off switch on my 18021 blew when replacing the light bulb. Does this happen? What can I do about it?

    1. Did you use the correct bulb? Make sure the wattage is at or around 15W and try again. If you think the switch and/or the transformer have really gone bad, you should be able to find an original Kenmore light/motor switch or complete wiring assembly on eBay. (I just looked on eBay and there are about 25 complete assemblies for sale starting at $18 and that includes the motor!)
